Our Passover

Hebrews 11:28

28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

The judgement of God had been on the Egyptians for a while now. Moses had come to Pharaoh and gave the message that God wanted His people freed. According to Exodus 5:2 Pharoah’s answer was, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.” The Egyptians worshiped many different god’s, the chief of which was Pharaoh himself. So the True God began to rain judgement on them through sending plagues. Each one was an attack on one of their god’s to show their impotence and God’s power.

The final Judgement showed the true powerlessness of Pharaoh himself as God took the life of each firstborn from the poorest Egyptian home to the palace of the so-called god-king himself. The only exception was for those who obeyed God’s word, sacrificing a lamb and spread the blood on the doorpost of the home. Only then would God’s judgement passover their home and spare those inside.

This sacrifice was instituted as a yearly sacrifice for the nation of Israel as each family would bring a spotless lamb to sacrifice in remembrance of this night. Then when Jesus Christ came as the final passover lamb, this picture of God’s grace in sparing those who have placed their faith in His word was completed on the cross. Today as we look back on Calvary we see the Lamb, slain in our place so the judgement of God would passover us. Just as Moses placed his faith in God’s requirement to be spared from this plague, we also must place our faith in God’s word as we look to Christ in faith as our sacrifice.

Today as we ReFocus our hearts and minds on Christ, let us stand with Moses in faith looking to our passover, Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us! (1 Cor 5:7)
