Just a closer walk with thee

Hebrews 11:5-6

By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, qthat he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

A story is told of a little girl who came home from Sunday School one day and her mother asked her what she had learned about. The little girl said, “We talked about Enoch.”

“Oh, you did?”, her mother asked. “What did you learn about him?”

“Well, apparently”, the little girl began, “Enoch was a man who used to walk with God. God would come by Enoch’s house every morning and say to him, ‘Enoch, would you like to go for a walk with me today?’ and Enoch would go with Him.

Well, I guess this went on and on for a really long time, and every day they would walk a little farther. One day, they walked so far and it got so late in the day that God told Enoch, ‘Enoch, we really walked a long way today, and it’s getting really late. We are a lot closer to my house than we are yours. Why don’t you come home with me.’ So, Enoch went home with God to His house.”

Today we are considering the faith of Enoch. We first learn about him in Genesis 5 where the genealogies from Adam start. As Moses begins to reveal to us the children of Adam that led to Israel we see a pattern emerging. Adam fathered Seth…and died. Seth fathered Enos…and died. Enos fathered Cainan…and died. This continues until the we get to Enoch. His testimony is a light of hope in a dark world. Enoch fathered Methusalah…and was not! Rather than facing death, God removed Enoch from this world and took Him to heaven.

What was so different about him? Genesis tells us that he “walked” with God. He followed God, He Fellowshipped with God. He was known for the amount of time He spent with his Lord. Hebrews tells us he pleased God. While I am sure he was not perfect, he strove to live a life of faith toward, taking God at His word and seeking to put it into practice.

Did that conversation that the young lady heard in Sunday School actually happen. Probably not. But it does make me think. If Christ came back for His church today, how long of a trip would it be for me to go home to Heaven. Would Christ look at my faith and find that I am closer to Him than I am to this world?

Today, as we ReFocus our hearts and minds on Christ and His word, consider the faith of Enoch. Let us be found walking with God unashamedly.  Let us be found believing God’s word unreservedly. May we be said to have this testimony, that our lives pleased God.
